Coaching info

Some coaching related documents have been sent by Jeff Bonazzo – Association Coach Register, Code of Conduct, Code of ethics form and NCAP Overview.

Abridged message from Jeff follows:

Hi all,

I have attached the most up to date Coach’s Code of Conduct (name change to bring it inline with other NZIHF initiatives over 2009) that all coaches in your clubs will need to sign and return to me in order to coach ice hockey in NZ in 2009. I suggest that these forms go through Susan and sent to me just once or through your club secretaries and passed on to me by them. I am not sure which will be the best way for your clubs.

As well there is a Club Register for your club to fill the names of all active coaches in you clubs as a check and balance against registrations that I receive from coaches. Registration to the NCAP gives your coaches access to a lot of support through my position within the NZIHF in several ways. This will become more clear as you read the brief on the NCAP I have also supplied.

At present there is no police clearance form that needs to be done along with the Code but that is certainly an aspect we are looking at and a measure we are thinking of instating in 2010 to ensure the safety of our players and our coaches. There is one club I know of that already does this with every coach in the club.

I have includes a somewhat brief over view of the National Coaching Accreditation Program (NCAP) the Federation is rolling out in 2009. The actual protocol is aimed to be released at the start of April this year with the full support of the NZIHF as agreed to at the AGM last month. The protocol will be fully implemented in 2010.

We have already held the IIHF Level II Coaching Course in Chch a couple weeks back and it was attended by two southern coaches Richard McCutcheon (Alex) and Stephen Reid (Gore). They must now get their exams in and successfully attain an 80% pass to gain the accreditation documentation. A third coach, Susan Green was slated to attend but could not due to work commitments through a co-worker’s injury. This course was offered to coaches across NZ with an achieved Level I qualification.

I have been in contact with Niel in Queenstown about running a Level I in Southern there in Qtown as we ran the Basic Coaching Course there last season. I aim to run a Basic Coaching Course along with the Learn to Play course in Dunedin and Gore or Queenstown this year. I am looking to book in dates for all of these please. I have a couple of weekends booked up in April and May already but would like the Basics done by end of June.

Also be aware of the South Island U16 Camp that is being run in Tekapo over Queen’s Birthday weekend. This camp is organised by Peter Anderson but I will attend as an instructor along with a few IBs and IFs and is fully sanctioned by the NZIHF. I will send more info out to Susan and to all of you in the next week or so.

Another thing to note is that the 2010 Summer Development Camps are coming to the Southern Region and will take place in January for all U13s and rep U16s. The camp will be run in Dunedin. I have already booked the ice for the camps with Mr Gamble. Info will come out shortly for these too.

The National U18 program should take more focus in Southern this season too. There are plans underway. This links in with what you have wisely allowed Niel to do with the Juniors in the region. I know you will have a stronger showing in 2009 come Junior Nationals!

We have been working on a leaflet to give out to current players and prospective players about the NZIHF, an intro to hockey and where your registration goes. I may be asking for some info from the SIHL to include. I am hearing rumors about a name change for one of the clubs down there and wold like to know sooner rather than later as I want to have these out by May 1 if I can get the funds to publish them.

Don’t forget about the U16 National League starting up in 2010!

All the best.
