The Midget and Junior grades are the only youth grade where body checking is allowed in Dunedin.
The use of body checks in ice hockey is well defined. The purpose of body checking in ice hockey is to cause an opposing player to loose control of the puck, not to hurt them.
Dangerous or illegal body checks are sanctioned by penalties which varies with the severity of the offence.
Players in the Midget and Junior grades are taught when and how to deliver body-checks in a safe and effective manner. This minimise the risk of injury to themselves and to opposing players. This training also includes instructions on how to properly receive a body-check from an opposing player.
