The Peewee grade is for players aged under 13 years old. This grade allows players to improve on the basic individual skills they’ve learned in Kiwi-Hockey. Basic team tactics are also introduced so players can learn to play as a team.
Beginner peewee players are required to complete the Kiwi-Hockey programme before they can play with other peewee players.
Body checking is not allowed at the Peewee grade.
The Peewee grade is the first level where players have to officially join the Dunedin Ice Hockey Association (DIHA) and the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF). This allows them to take part in local, regional and national games.
This allows them to play in club nights on Saturdays. Club nights are one-off friendly games with other local Dunedin players. Club nights are a good opportunity to improve skills in a non-competitive game environment.
The Southern Ice Hockey League (SIHL) is a regional competition covering the Otago and Southland regions as well as parts of Canterbury. It includes peewee teams from:
This competition is run over the winter months and involves travelling to these towns for games.
The best peewee players in the SIHL are selected once a year to represent Southern in the nationals. They get to compete against the best peewee players from the Canterbury and Auckland regions in a round robin competition called the Peewee National Ice Hockey League.
