The 2014 Erewhon Cup ice hockey tournament was held in Alexandra this weekend.

The Dunedin Penguins topped off a flawless weekend by defeating the Dunedin Washouts 2 to 1 in the final.

Ben Roth took advantage of a scramble in front the Washout net to open the score for the Penguins in the first period. Washout captain, Darcy Knyvett, leveled the score in the second period with a powerful slap shot from the point. With only a few minutes to go in the game, Jesse Kantanen put the Penguins on top with a shorthanded goal on a break away.

Penguins captain, Nigel Dobson, received the Erewhon cup on behalf of his team and had this to say: “I might end up crying. I’ve been trying to win this trophy for 20 years. I was beginning to think it would never happen.”

Both Dunedin teams dominated the tournament and went into the final undefeated.

The Erewhon cup was first awarded in 1937 and has become a fixture of Southern ice hockey.
