Level 1 Referee Course to be help on July 26-27 in Dunedin

Southern Ice Hockey League will be offering a NZIHF Level 1 referee training on 26 and 27 July. The training will be supervised by former NZIHF Referee-in-Chief Jerome Raateland.

The training is suitable for unqualified officials of all levels and ages. Attendees will leave with a NZIHF Level 1 Referee qualification, which enables them to officiate games at all levels. They will also receive a International Ice Hockey Federation Officials Procedures Manual, and IIHF Rulebook.

Format and schedule for the training

The weekend includes teaching on philosophy of officiating, procedures, penalties, rules, and an on ice training session and testing.

The course begins on Saturday at 10.00am, and Sunday at 9am, and runs through until the National League games (West Auckland Admirals vs Dunedin Thunder) that Dunedin is hosting on both Saturday (5pm) and Sunday (1pm). Lunch is provided on Saturday.

Cost for the weekend

Camp costs are being covered by Southern Ice Hockey League to assist officials development throughout the region. All attendees will have to pay $40 which is the cost of the official rule book.

What to bring

  • Skates
  • Helmet
  • Whistle
  • Pen and paper

Additional protective gear (shin pads, elbow pads) is recommended for skating tests.

Helping the DIHA

The Dunedin Ice Hockey Association Board of Directors meets on the first Monday of every month at the Dunedin Ice Stadium. If you are interested in being involved with the committee and organising hockey events in Dunedin then please contact the DIHA secretary.
