Ireland vs Greece

The first game on day one of the IIHF World Ice Hockey Championships Division III featured Ireland who are rated as #2 in the competition against #5 rated Greece. Ireland started strongly, outpacing their Greek opposition, but the solid Greek defense held back the Irish attack well. Once warmed up, the Greek team had no difficulty in breaking past the slow moving Irish defense to fire in two goals during the first period. The second period saw the Greek team score another two goals, although the Irish did managed to squeak a goal in before the end of the period. The third period saw the Irish show a more solid performance with their two fast moving players Higgins and Morrison scoring a goal each. But the Greeks consolidated the lead with three more goals to take the win 7 – 3. Greek player Papadopoulos provided some amusement in the third period by getting a ‘delay of game’ penalty for throwing the puck into the penalty box.
