Day 4 at the IIHF U20 World Champs
Game 13, 21 January 2017 10:00am, Quarterfinal 1
- Final Score: Israel 9 – South Africa 0
- Shots: Israel 47 – South Africa 13
The first period was a defensive battle with few good scoring opportunities in the period. The game was scoreless heading into period number two.
Israel opened the scoring 37 seconds into period 2 on a goal by Ariel Kapulkin, and tallies by Gur Sever and Tom Ignatovich. Israel extended the lead to 4-0 on a powerplay goal by Tomer Aharonovich. Israel was not done yet, though as they scored again just prior to period’s end with the goal scored by Kapulkin, his second of the game.
Israel extended the lead to 6-0 on a goal by Mark Revniaga, and added another insurance goal by Itay Mostovoy.
Israel has played with sticks borrowed from Dunedin Ice Hockey Association club members until the third period, when their sticks which had been lost arrived at the rink. They responded with 4 goals in the third period, their highest scoring period of the tournament thus far.
Israeli goalies Raz Werner and Yoav Regev combined for the shutout win. They were not very busy though as combined they only saw 13 shots for the game, compared to 47 shots fired toward the South African goalies.
The best players for the game were Matthew Ruthven for South Africa and Ariel Kapulkin for Israel.
Game 14, 21 January 2017 1:30pm, Quarterfinal 2
- Final Score: Bulgaria 5 – Chinese Taipei 1
- Shots: Bulgaria 40 – Chinese Taipei 36
Game 14 featured Bulgaria vs winless Chinese Taipei. The first period was lopsided in the favour of the Bulgarians. It was the Dilkov and Vasilev show early on as Miroslav Vasilev scored two goals and assisted on the other Bulgarian goal tallied by Daniel Dilkov (who also assisted on one goal). Bulgaria went into the first period break up 3 to 0.
Bulgaria extended their lead to 5-0 in the second period on goals by Ivaylo Georgiev and Yanaki Gatchev. The shots on goal are nearly even witth Bulgaria shooting 25 on net while Chinese Taipei has shot on net 24 times. But Bulgaria has had the superior scoring chances and excellent goaltending by Dimitar Dimitrov and this has kept the Chinese Taipei squad off the scoreboard so far.
The third period saw Chinese Taipei get on the scoreboard with a goal by Yi-Cheng Pan. Bulgaria netted one further goal with 52 seconds left in the game making the final score 6-1 in favour of Bulgaria.
The best players for the game were goaltender Dimitar Dimitrov for Bulgaria and Yi-Cheng Pan for Chinese Taipei.
Game 15, 21 January 2017 5:00pm, Semi-final 1
- Final Score: Turkey 3 – Iceland 2
- Shots: Turkey 28 – Iceland 28
Game 15 featured undefeated Turkey vs Iceland. Iceland opened the scoring in period 1 by converting a Turkey turnover in the defensive zone into a short-handed goal on a whistling wrist shot by Hjalti Johannsson. The rest of the period was played at a fast pace with 14 shots for Iceland and 10 for Turkey.
Period two was filled with end to end fast paced action, but only one goal. Iceland extended their lead to 2-0 with a beautiful goal by Vignir Arason on a hard shot from the point after Iceland dug a loose puck out of the corner.
Turkey got on the scoreboard early in the third period capitalising on a fast rush down the ice with Ferhat Bakal scoring the unassisted goal.
The goal re-energised Turkey and they got their offense rolling. Turkey tied the game on a goal by Hakan Salt and the game winner was scored by Fatih Faner.
Iceland battled valiantly with their goalie pulled and had a few great scoring opportunities that were thwarted by Turkish goalie Tolga Bozaci. The horn sounded and Turkey was moving through to the gold medal game.
The best players for the game were Maksymilan Mojzyszek for Iceland and goaltender Tolga Bozaci for Turkey.
Game 16, 21 January 2017 8:30pm, Semi-final 2
- Final Score: China 11 – New Zealand 2
- Shots: China 56 – New Zealand 15
Game 16 featured undefeated China vs New Zealand. China was too big, fast and strong for the New Zealand side to handle.
China took an early 3-0 in the first six minutes of the game and New Zealand called on backup goaltender James Moore to put out the fire. The goals for China were scored by Rudi Ying (two goals), Qianyi Huang and Zemin Deng.
New Zealand battled hard to keep the the game close in the second period. Seamus Leahy scored a goal on a misplay by the Chinese goalie behind the net. Leahy snuck the puck into the vacated net to make the score 4-1. China’s Rudi Ying answered 2 minutes later to restore the comfortable four goal lead.
Shaun Brown brought the New Zealand squad back witin reach by sneaking a shot under the pads of the goalie to bring the score back to 5-2.
China put the game away with ease in the third period as New Zealand could not stop the well oiled machine that is Team China. China scored five unanswered goals in the third period and the New Zealand side was not able to mount much of an offensive push and were outshot 23-3 for the period.
The best players for the game were James Morre for New Zealand and and Hao Wu for China.
