Day 3 at the IIHF U20 World Champs

Chinese Taipei vs Iceland

Game 9, 19 January 2017 10:00am, Group A

• Final Score: Chinese Taipei 2 – Iceland 7
• Shots: Chinese Taipei 18 – Iceland 60

Thursday morning started off with a match-up between Chinese Taipei and Iceland. Iceland opened up a first period two goal lead on a short-handed tally by Edmunds Induss and a goal by Jon Arason.

Iceland broke the game open early in the second period on the second goal of the game by Induss and goals by Elvar Olafsson and Styrmir Maack.

Po-Juo Huang tallied for Chinese Taipei 14 minutes into the second to get the home team on the scoreboard making the score cutting the deficit to 6-1.

Chinese Taipei never threatened in the game and the two teams traded goals later in the game with the final being 7-2 in favour of the Iceland squad.

The best players for the game were Edmunds Induss for Iceland and Po-Juo Huang for Chinese Taipei.

South Africa vs Turkey

Game 10, 19 January 2017 1:30pm, Group A

• Score: South Africa 0 – Turkey 6
• Shots: South Africa 10 – Turkey 55

Game 10 matched winless South Africa versus undefeated Turkey.

Turkey opened the scoring on a goal by Emre Secer and had numerous power play advantages early on that seemed to wear down the South Africans, but they were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard.

The second period saw Turkey extend their lead by taking advantage of a poorly timed line change by South Africa to net the goal on a break away by Omer Kars. Sefa Kavas extended the lead for Turkey later in the second period.

Fatih Faner extended the lead to 4-0 with a powerplay goal four minutes 30 seconds into the 3rd period. South Africa offended again and Omer Kars punished them for it with his second goal of the game 13 minutes into the third.

Sait Bingol for Turkey added an additional insurance goal with a minute left in the third to make the final score 6 for Turkey and 0 for South Africa.

The best players for the game were both goalies, Muhammed Karagul for Turkey and Aslam Khan for South Africa.

China vs Israel

Game 11, 19 January 2017 5:00pm, Group A

• Score: China 6 – Israel 4
• Shots: China 47 – Israel 20

Game 11 featured undefeated China versus 1-1 Israel.

Israel started the scoring with an unassisted goal by Mark Revniaga. China answered 10 seconds later to tie the score on a goal by Jianing Guo. China extended the lead to 3-1 on a goal by Pengfei Zhang.

The second period was more even with shots on goal 9 for China and 8 for Israel in the period. Each team tallied a goal and the score was 4-2 at the period break. Israel’s goal was scored by Gur Sever on the powerplay and China scored even strength by Hao Wu.

China made Israel pay for offending midway through the third with a powerplay goal by Qianyi Huang, assisted by R Zuo and J Guo.

Rudi Ying scored for China to make the game 6-2 for China. Israel battked back to make it interesting with two late goals coming off the stick of Tom Ignatovich.

The best players for the game were the goalie for China Mingwei Ren and Tom Ignatovich for Israel.

Bulgaria vs New Zealand

Game 12, 19 January 2017 8.30pm, Group B

• Final Score: Bulgaria 4 – New Zealand 5
• Shots: Bulgaria 26 – New Zealand 46

Game 12 had host New Zealand sqauring off against Bulgaria for a spot in the semi-finals.

New Zealand got off to an early 3 goal lead on goals by Taylor Rooney, a goal on a strange deflection by Alexander Egan and a power play goal by Rooney. New Zealand also had a penalty shot by Ben Harford that was stopped by Bulgarian goalie Dimitar Dimitrov.

The first period was hard hitting hockey with a few plays outside of the boundaries of the rules and several misconduct penalties issued as a result.

Bulgaria battled back into the game with two quick goals in the second period by Daniel Dilkov and Yanaki Gatchev. Gatchev netted his second goal of the game to even the score three minutes later.

New Zealand regrouped and outshot Bulgaria for the third period but it was Bulgaria who broke the deadlock with a nifty goal by Georgi Blagoev. Bulgaria held on to the lead until the very end of the game, when Taylor Rooney completed his hat trick with a beautiful top-shelf back-hand goal from close range.

Two poorly timed penalties gave New Zealand a 5 on 3 powerplay in the last minute of the game. New Zealand capitalised with a one-timer from Robin Vortanov, who has developed a flair for the dramatic with his second late game winning goal in a row.

Bulgaria did not give up and a mad scramble around the net ensued with goaltender Taylor Goodall protecting the New Zealand lead.

When time expired the Kiwis had advanced to the semi-finals to face China on Saturday 21 January at 8:30 PM. Bulgaria will play Chinese Taipei at 1:30 PM on Saturday.

The best players for the game were Taylor Rooney for New Zealand and Daniel Dilkov for Bulgaria.
