The Dunedin Ice Hockey Association, in collaboration with the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation and the Dunedin Ice Stadium, is honored to be hosting the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship in Dunedin from 16-22 January 2017.

Eight nations will be travelling to Dunedin, New Zealand to compete in the 2017 IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship Division III:

  • Bulgaria
  • China
  • Chinese Taipei
  • Iceland
  • Israel
  • New Zealand

  • Turkey

The International Ice Hockey Federation selected Dunedin to host the 2017 U20 World Championship Division III. This is the third time Dunedin will be hosting the U-20 World Championship; Dunedin hosted the tournament in 2012 and 2015.

For seven days, 160 young men from eight different countries will be competing for the top spot.

The under-20 grade is the last youth level in ice hockey before players transition to senior leagues. These players will be the next elite players of their respective nations.

This tournament will bring together over 200 players, coaches, support staff and officials from four different continents, not counting parents and supporters.

It will inject over a quarter million dollars of financial benefits directly into the Dunedin economy and will provide a unique opportunity to showcase our region as an outstanding tourist and sporting destination.
