The Dunedin Thunder, our local NZIHL team, is already busy preparing for the 2015 season.
Every year, we have a number imports, joining us from overseas. And we are looking to make their stay with us as comfortable as possible.
Thunder has had 2 very strong years. Next year, we will be losing a number of players threw leaving University, changing jobs etc. This will mean our imports next year will be crucial.
Each NZIHL team is allowed a fixed number of imported players. These players usually come from elite overseas leagues. Playing in the NZIHL is an opportunity for them to have an Overseas Experience and to keep in shape during their off season.
This also gives our local elite players to improve by playing with/against top overseas talent.
Every year since Thunder was established, families have put their hand up to billet or house imports. In an ideal world the imports can pay you for room and board. This often depends on their circumstances with money and work.
We’re looking for people interested in housing an import for next year. They usually arrive around April and leave around September. If you are in the position to provide free lodgings that would be fantastic. If you are able to house and need a contribution, this is also helpful.
The families that have billeted in the past have had some fantastic experiences and have made friends for life. If you have a young one playing with the club they will learn huge amounts from your billet and as an adult its a great way to make a new friend and a contact overseas for when you do your own travelling.
Most of the imports are looking for work when they come for the season. Some have a trade but many do not. Let us know if you or your workplace have suitable work opportunities that may suit an import for next year. Most imports do part time jobs but anything is good.
Contact our Head Coach, Janos Kaszala, or the Thunder Manager, Sharon Darling, if you are able to help house an imported player or if you have some employment opportunities.
