Southern Ice Hockey League will be offering a NZIHF Level 1 referee training on 26 and 27 July. The training will be supervised by former NZIHF Referee-in-Chief Jerome Raateland.
The training is suitable for unqualified officials of all levels and ages. Attendees will leave with a NZIHF Level 1 Referee qualification, which enables them to officiate games at all levels. They will also receive a International Ice Hockey Federation Officials Procedures Manual, and IIHF Rulebook.
The weekend includes teaching on philosophy of officiating, procedures, penalties, rules, and an on ice training session and testing.
The course begins on Saturday at 10.00am, and Sunday at 9am, and runs through until the National League games (West Auckland Admirals vs Dunedin Thunder) that Dunedin is hosting on both Saturday (5pm) and Sunday (1pm). Lunch is provided on Saturday.
Camp costs are being covered by Southern Ice Hockey League to assist officials development throughout the region. All attendees will have to pay $40 which is the cost of the official rule book.
Additional protective gear (shin pads, elbow pads) is recommended for skating tests.
