Register for beginner referee training

The Dunedin Ice Hockey Association will be running a training session for beginner officials. This will be run in conjunction with the high school games on 11 June. Trainees will be given a one hour classroom session the night before, and then put on the ice to officiate B grade games under the supervision of officials.

This training session is ideal for people keen to try officiating. Trainees should be at least 13 years of age, a reasonable skater forwards and backwards, and keen to give back to their sport.

Trainees will need to be available 7pm on Tuesday 10 June for an hour and a half, and from 4.30pm on Wednesday 11 June until 8pm. Their officiating on the Wednesday can be worked around their game if they have one.

Bring

Skates, shin pads, elbow pads, black pants, whistle.

Bring a referee top if you have one, but some will be available. Helmets with half visors will be provided.

Qualification

Completion of the Course qualifies you to referee club peewees and B grade high schools.

Later in the year (July) we will have a full New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation level one course. Completion of that course, which takes place over a weekend, entitles you to referee checking and SNC hockey at all levels, and sets you on the path to refereeing NZIHL games in the future.

Cost

There is no cost to attend the course.

Trainees will receive no payment for their officiating on the day.

Trainees will be paid for future officiating.

Registration

Email Dunedin Ice Hockey Association Referee-in-Chief, Kyle Matthews (kyle.matthews@otago.ac.nz), to register for the course.
