Dunedin to host the under-20 ice hockey championship

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has selected Dunedin to host the U-20 World Championship Division III in 2015. The tournament will be held from January 19 to January 25.

The New Zealand team will be competing on its home ice against teams from China, Mexico, Turkey, South Africa and Bulgaria.

New Zealand finished third at the last U-20 championship in Bulgaria. The team included 2 current Dunedin Thunder players:  Ben Roth and Tristan Darling.

In total, the IIHF has announced the host cities for 28 tournaments in 2015:

  • Auckland will host the U-18 World Championship Division III Group B in March ;
  • the Ice Blacks will be competing for the World Championship Division II Group B, in Cap Town, South Africa, in April ;
  • the Ice Fernzs will be competing for Women’s World Championship Division II Group A, in Dumfries, Great Britain, in April.
